It took me a long time before I attempted to make the switch to natural deodorants. If I’m going to be totally transparent, if a product is natural, I’m not typically sold right off the bat. That’s just the way it is right? To a product junkie like me, efficacy always comes into question. However, after much trial and error and a look into the various reasons why I should go the natural route, I was finally compelled to make the switch. And I was pleasantly surprised.
#1 Calm Down Hyperpigmentation
I guess I’ll start with why I decided to switch from antiperspirants to natural deodorants. I’m quite vain. Just kidding… sort of. I’ve always had quite a bit of hyper pigmentation in my underarm area as I’m sure lots of women of color do. I didn’t really think much of it, until I read that aluminum could be a contributing factor as well as fragrance and baking soda. With the exception of the other two, I decided that it would be a step in the right direction if I could at least eliminate aluminum…baby steps. I’m not quite ready to start applying a deodorant paste to my pits, so if I can at least start using an aluminum-free deodorant then I’m in good shape.
#2 No Plugs Please
I’ll admit I love the idea of a sweat-blocking antiperspirant, but the reality is that isn’t healthy. Antiperspirants are meant to block your ability to sweat which is unnatural. The body needs to be able to release toxins, but how do you do that when you’re applying a sweat blocking, pit plug? Excuse my french.
#3 Aluminum Free Is The Way To Be
In all sincerity this really should’ve been reason numero uno. Aluminum toxicity has always been a topic of great health concern as it should be. I don’t really know why I pushed it’s harmful effects on health to the back of my mind, but I definitely did. I guess I could attribute my now wanting to eliminate unnecessary toxins from my life to the fact that I am more conscious of my health and wellness than I ever was before. I don’t care what all the fancy doctors say, the closeness of the pits to all the important nodes and breast tissue totally freaks me out. And for right now that’s all the reason I need.
If you are looking to transition from antiperspirant to natural deodorants here are four brands I absolutely am loving. I’ve come to realize that after continual use I haven’t had any issues with natural deodorants at all! Please do remember that you will have to apply just a bit more than you would a normal antiperspirant! My list starts with Nubian Heritage being at the top! The scent is unreal and I love that it’s black owned! I’ve repurchased this one at least 4 times now.

I’ve switched to natural deodorant before, but never had much luck – I’ll have to try these!
I’ve heard really good things about Native deodorant, but haven’t tried it. I have been using Piper Wai and it works well 🙂
I’ll hav to try these. I’ve had horrible reactions with ones I’ve tried in the past.
